December 2011 New Year

Had a great four nights in both cottages and a brilliant New Years Eve.  Very well equipped cottages with fantastic views.  Surrounding area equally as good.  We had a trip to Beer where we had crab sandwiches.  We would all love to come again and stay in your fantastic cottages.  Many many thanks from us all.  Lawson family and friends, Beds and Herts.

December Christmas

November 2011
After a wonderful stay in March, we decided to return to Bidwell Farm for a 50th birthday. ... We have all had a fantastic time and couldn’t have asked for more for the birthday weekend.   The meal at the pub on Saturday was wonderful although I don’t think that any of us are going to eat for a week!  A big thank you to Richard and Patsy for making this a special weekend (and keeping the surprise going).  We hope to be back soon.    Shaun, Jane, Sharon, Colin, Mel & Tom, Rob & Sylvie. Bromsgrove, Birmingham, Coventry & Cornwall

October 2011
Our second visit to the Haybarton.  Just as lovely as the first.  It was my birthday and a brilliant way to spend it at the Sidmouth Arms.  Lovely cottage, cosy and comfortable.  Family loved it.  Many thanks to Patsy and Richard for getting it just right again.   Phelp Family, Christchurch, Dorset.

October 2011
Our first stay in the Haybarton, second at Bidwell Farm.  We have had a wonderfully relaxing week.  Our son from Exeter University joining us for the weekend.  Enjoyed the fishing, the walks and just gazing at the tremendous views.  Thank you for making our stay so comfortable and for the gorgeous jam and homemade bread.  We hope to be back soon!!  The Ivory Family, Pinner, Middx.

October 2011
We both needed a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of working in London and that is just what we got at Bidwell. An amazing cottage, magnificent scenery and a very warm welcome from Patsy and Richard.  The homemade gifts were delicious.  We can definitely recommend the Sidmouth Arms in the village and the food is good.  We have certainly recharged our batteries and will return again – loved the ducks.  Tony and Christine Veatrite, Bexleyheath, Kent.

September 2011
Another fantastic break at Bidwell.  Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  Sam liked the kids play area as he loves his football.  Baby Betheny had a great time for her first holiday.  Loved to feed the ducks and enjoyed her first visit to the beach at Lyme.  Hope to be back soon.  Julie and Tim Roberts and family, Cwmbran, South Wales.

September 2011
We have had a lovely time in this wonderfully homely cottage.  It has everything we need and more.  Like the very warm welcome from Patsy and Richard and of course the inquisitive ducks.  The cottage has been the perfect base..... and we wish we were staying longer.  Thanks for the delicious homemade bread, marmalade and super fresh eggs.  Bustards, Kent & Brighton.

August 2011
We have had a lovely week together here as family.  The setting has been ideal with Thomas learning to score goals and dribble every day in the beautiful garden.  Lots of space to relax and unwind.  We have particularly enjoyed visiting the coast at Sidmouth, Beer and Lyme Regis.  Meals at the Sidmouth Arms are excellent.  Huge, Kathy, Janet, Richard, Mark, Elizabeth and Thomas aged 1.  Links Derbyshire, Herts.

An opportunity to slow down, enjoy the real home comforts that Bidwell Farm has to offer while appreciating the wonderful gardens and peaceful surroundings.  A real gem, hidden in the quaint village of Up-Ottery.  Received a warm welcome from Richard and Patsy.  Thank you to you both for the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful place.   The Greenwood family, West Yorkshire.

Counting the weeks to be back at Bidwell once again.  Had a wonderful family holiday, so lovely to be with Patsy and Richard once more.  They make us so welcome and do everything they can to ensure our time with them is excellent......  Hope to be back again sooner than soon.

Our 9th visit – just as wonderful as ever.  A week at Bidwell is always just what we need to recharge our batteries.  It is so nice to spend quality time with the boys playing cricket, badminton and boules, as well as enjoying lovely days out together.  Food at the Sidmouth Arms was back to its best....  Thanks for your warm hospitality and your bread, eggs, marmalade and plums and for just being there for help and advice (or just a chat) throughout our stay.  Already looking forward to our next visit.   Webbs, Nelson, Lancs.

June 2011

This was our second visit to Bidwell Farm and once again we have had the most wonderful and relaxing holiday. Richard and Patsy were as warm and friendly as ever and it was worth making the trip for Richard's bread alone! Despite the mixed weather we've had great days out at Escot, Sidmouth, Bicton Park and Powderham Castle then back to Bidwell to enjoy the fantastic cottage and idyllic surroundings. Perfect and the best bit for us has been seeing the kids have such a happy time here. We will definitely be back again. Jackie, Mark, Daniel and Kyle Smith. Lancashire.

June 2011
From the delicious smell of freshly baked bread on our arrival, we knew we were going to enjoy our stay at Bidwell.  We were not disappointed – it is a truly wonderful place for a family holiday.  We were three generations and there was something for us all.  The children and adults, looked forward to putting the ducks to bed each evening and collecting the eggs each morning.  Fly fishing was very popular with one member of our party and the play equipment was a huge success.  We cannot leave Bidwell without mentioning our hosts, Richard and Patsy.  Nothing was too much trouble and we were privileged to share their beautiful home.  I am sure we will see you again.  Smiths and Rollason, South Staffs.

May 2011

What a fantastic holiday!  We have thoroughly enjoyed our break at Bidwell Farm.  Patsy and Richard were really welcoming and nothing was too much trouble.  Ben 18 months, had the time of his life putting the ducks to bed and letting them out at breakfast time.  The location is stunning and we all went home relaxed.  Lots of great attractions closeby.....  Ransom, Newbury.l

April 2011
We have had a wonderful stay at Bidwell Farm.  The Haybarton is an excellent cottage deserving of its 5 star rating.  We have been extremely lucky with beautiful weather.  We know the area really well but have found a true gem here.  Many thanks to Richard and Patsy for the warm welcome, delicious welcome pack and scrummy bread.  We hope to return for our next escape!
Lynda, Iris and Christine  - Bromsgrove and Redditch

April 2011
Visit number 7.  So, just what is it that makes us return?  Crab fishing off the Cob at Lyme Regis, hunting for fossils at Charmouth, a cream tea (or two), getting lost in the maize at Escot for ages, pottering about in Honiton, a pub lunch.......................  I am pretty sure we could do these things from some other conveniently placed holiday cottage but I am one hundred percent certain it would NEVER be the same!  Coming home to such wonderful hosts, being made to feel like a cherished relative, being treated to a rustic handmade loaf, fresh duck eggs, home made marmalade and best of all, a genuinely warm welcome home at the end of a busy day from two of the most endearing people.........   This is why we shall return year upon year.  Patsy and Richard you have created an idyllic home from home where we adults can relax and our children can be children to their hearts’ content.   Billijo, Phil, Emily and Amy, Hampshire.

April 2011
After 11 years, this is still heaven on earth............

Thank you Richard and Patsy for creating a magical spot in the Otter Valley. Church bells drifting across the fields, fresh duck eggs, rising trout and a log fire. What more could some jaded City dwellers ask for? Very little. Cheryl, Phil, George, Dallas and Rhonda, London.

March 2011

After staying at many Premier Cottages, we can now say that we have stayed at the best - the Haybarton!. Richard and Patsy can be proud of what they have created in a truly wonderful setting. The warm welcome along with Richard's bread and marmalade and Patsy's attention to detail, has made our stay a memorable one. We can recommend the Sidmouth Arms in Upottery. We had three delicious meals there. Also the Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary at Buckfastleigh, only 50 mins away. Having spent the last five weeks in and around Devon, I thought I had seen it all, that was until I was introduced to Bidwell Farm. What a treasure this place is !! "We do not need to say anything about the Haybarton, if you're reading this you're probably here - its fabulous. Use the log burner its easy and so effective. We enjoyed our meal at the local pub - be warned portions are large. We can recommend Topsham, Sidmouth and of course Exeter and its Cathedral. Dunster is also worth a visit if you fancy somewhere a bit futher away. Darts Farm also worth a visit. Richard asked if we had enjoyed his home-made marmalade, we said we were taking it home for our 93 year old friend and the next morning another jar appeared on the kitchen table. They are attentive without being intrusive, they care very much for your wellbeing when you stay with them. They are the PERFECT hosts. We came expecting 5 star and got 10 star. Very highly recommended. Carol and Ieuan Thomas, Neath South Wales.

"Grateful thanks to Patsy and Richard for their kind understanding and support for the handicapped member of our party. October 2011

We have all had a lovely time but it was just too short! Thank you for the lovely welcome. The kids had a lovely time playing outside as well as in - 4 kids, relaxing I am not sure but we enjoyed ourselves too. The cottage is lovely and it was great to see the ducks nosing in the window every day! Thank you. The Hartstone and Newman Families, Winsor, Berks.

October 2011

One of the nicest cottages we have stayed in. Fully equipped with everything you would want for your holiday stay. very big thank you to Richard and Patsy, you made us feel very welcome and what a lovely surprise; fresh duck eggs, homemade jam and the lovely home baked bread, delicious. Phoebe loved to get up early and let the ducks out of their pen, then looked forward to feeding them at the front door. We will be coming back again to see you as there is so much to do and see. Waltons, Ridgeway, Sheffield.

October 2011

Thank you Richard and Patsy for our mid house moving stay. It was a comfortable and relaxing week. We appreciated your help, apples, pears, jam, bread etc etc. We also loved the duck family. A really super cottage. The Mumford Family, Wendover, Bucks.

September 2011

We have all had a fantastic holiday here. Emma and Charlotte, (2 and 1) have really enjoyed the grounds and feeding the ducks in the morning. The location is superb, both in terms of the scenery and being able to access local places of interest easily. We have managed to get around quite a bit while we have been here but our favourite trips have probably been to the Sidmouth Arms. Also many thanks to Patricia and Richard for being so welcoming and helpful and especially for the homemade bread and marmalade. Hope to be back again. Will, Michaela, Charlotte, David, Marion and Emma, Twickenham, London and Middx.

September 2011

Although only a short break, we all really enjoyed it. The cottage was very comfortable and ideal for disabled with plenty of room for a wheelchair. We also loved the ducks who came down and tapped on the door to tell us they were hungry. Two great meals at the Sidmouth Arms - can certainly recommend the food. Enjoyed a day at Sidmouth and the Donkey Sanctuary. Hopefully another holiday next year. Thanks to Richard and Patsy for their gifts of bread (delicious) and marmalade. A really restful break. Clare, Duncan and Edna, Hampshire.

Stern dazu!  ☆☆☆☆☆ + ☆
Auf Wiedersehen!
Margarita und Wolfgang Bastian aus Hannover

August 2010

The only thing that could have been better was the weather. Thank you for a lovely stay. Lesley - I had a lovely week here and enjoyed the homemade bread very much. Thank you for letting us stay Rebecca. A lovely, restful, peaceful week which was what I needed. Enjoyed the visits from the duck and thank you for making our visit very welcoming, especially the bread and marmalade - Carole. Morgan and I have had a super week. He has loved everything about the farm but I think the ducks might be top of his list, tottering about, pointing at everything and making "baa" sounds at many things. Thank you for letting him experience the countryside. Sarah. Middx and Dorset.

August 2010

Bidwell Farm is a peaceful haven, surrounded by beautiful countryside. We have found the Cowbyre to be comfortable and spacious and is stocked with everything you could need. Thanks to our hosts for the bread, eggs and marmalade and thanks to Richard for his patience with the flyfishing lessons and the loan of the fossil hunting tools! We have travelled far and wide in our week here but have enjoyed Sidmouth, Dartmouth and the cliff railway at Lynton and Lynmouth, with the return journey through the beautiful Exmoor National Park. Wilson Family, Cambridgeshire.

August 2010

We would all like to say a massive thank you to Richard and Patsy for making our stay the most enjoyable stay ever. The accommodation is 5 star plus. The children loved the grounds and played on the swings for hours. Andy really enjoyed the fishing and duck duties will be sorely missed. Everything is within easy reach and everything you recommend in your guide we did and enjoyed. On our last day Andy caught a fish finally. Taylor family, Oxton, Wirral, Merseyside.

July 2010

Four kids of 4 and under this has been as relaxing as a holiday ever gets. We have all had a truly wonderful time. The Cowbyre has been perfect for the family. Maia has loved pestering Richard and Patsy and helping them around the garden, as well as making her new "best friend in the world" next door in the Haybarton. The boys have adored the swings, playing football and just running around. We have all loved feeding the ducks. Grown ups have enjoyed a glass of wine on beautiful summer evenings, looking out across the valley to the village - one of the most idyllic views you could desire. Thank you for the very warmest of welcomes. It has been a real pleasure. Laura, Nicholas, Miai, Sacha, Kitai and Caio, Kentish Town, London

July 2010

May 2010

We all enjoyed our stay here. A wonderful break away. Lovely views. Wonderful hosts Patsy and Richard. Made us feel at home!! Wish we could stay longer. Mum (Beryl) enjoyed feeding the ducks which meant we were short of bread for our toast in the morning. The barn was comfortable for Mum as she is disabled. Patsy and Richard went out of their way to make her stay enjoyable. Thank you both so much, we hope to see you again. xx Beryl, Caroline and Jacqui, Bristol.

April 2010

A wonderful holiday. Weather not sure if it is winter, spring or summer but who cares! Cottage warm and comfortable and Patsy and Richard ready and waiting to help if needed. 56 years ago visited Beer and had crab sandwiches and coffee on the beach every day. Low and behold, Mrs Chappell still serves the same goodies today. Wonderful. Granddaughter confirmed that she has been serving for 57 years. Health permitting we would love to visit again. The area has so much to offer and we would have difficulty in finding anywhere to equal Richard and Patsy's hospitality. Topliss Family, Willington Derbyshire.

April 2010

Our many visits here are always so special but this one was exceptional - to celebrate a 70th birthday as well as Easter. March 2010

Perfect holiday, perfect cottage, perfect location. We really enjoyed the fresh bread, eggs and marmalade. It made the holiday really special. We loved looking after the ducks. We visited the Eden Project which was really good and a few beaches. My favourite beach was Sidmouth. We had icecreams there. The log burner was really nice as well. We had a good time crabbing in Lyme Regis but all we caught was a tiny prawn. Jessica. (The Fraser Family, Newbury, Berks).

February 2010

Had a lovely time. The house is beautiful and we all enjoyed relaxing and watching films during the short spell of rain. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the birds from our window and watching the sheep being herded right outside our bedrooms. These beautiful grounds and friendly ducks were the best company for our half term. The Cotterill Family, West Sussex.

January 2010

A lovely 4 night stay to celebrate Francesca's 30th birthday. The cottage is fabulous! Comfortable, warm, well equipped and a true home from home. The boys really enjoyed their stay especially the frequent visits from the duckies - so much so that Luca woke every morning at 05.30 hours. Thank you Richard and Pat for making us all so welcome. Adam, Francesco, Luca and Joshua, Birmingham.

January 2010

Richard and Patsy. Thank you so much for everything. Our short stay here in the Byre has been good for our souls. We were beginning to despair at the "hit and miss" standard of accommodation as we have travelled around and were desperately in need of some genuine home comfort! We love the cottage, the decor, the textiles, the beautiful ambience and the QUALITY! It was like being at home in the English countryside. When you eventually get to Australia please come and stay in our little part of paradrise - we have plenty of space and would love to show you what our beautiful part of the world has to offer. Thank you again for everying. Ritchie Family, Melbourne, Australia.

December 09 - Christmas

We've had a really chilled week here at Bidwell. The Cowbyre has suited our needs perfectly. Euan especially has loved every minute here. The space, the ducks, Tigger the cat, the pond and the cows have all made it magical for him. Particular highlights have included Budleigh Salterton, Somerset Steam Railway, Branscombe and our real favourite has got to be Beer, it's a real little gem of a place! Could do with another week really, there's so much to see and do. We've had a much needed rest and couldn't have wished for a lovelier place to have spent our time. Thank you Patsy and Richard, we have had such a wonderful holiday. The weather was not wonderful but the welcome we received and the comfortable and warm accommodation was fantastic. The marmalade Richard is delicious - we also had the same feelings about your wonderful holiday let and hope to see you again. Derek and Sheila Masters, Frances and Gordon, Rye, East Sussex.

May 09

We have all had a splendid week, an opportunity to spend some of that quality time together, that is not always available to other families that are more widely spread. A mutual liking for walking has been satisfied by the abundance of footpaths and we have walked, sometimes as a group but also separately. Patsy and Richard have been most welcoming and informative. The Cow Byre accommodation has been ideal, the combined dining/lounge area giving ample opportunity to keep up to date with each other. With Richard's tuition, Andrew was introduced to the techniques/skills required for fly fishing. Mike also used the pool, albeit in a rather different way, preparing to take part in a triathlon next month. We would not hesitate to revisit this part of Devon and Bidwell Farm in particular. Jenny & Bob Donaldson, West Kirby, Wirral.

April 09

Once again we have had a very enjoyable break and the weather has been perfect. Many thanks to Patsy and Richard. Sue, Maureen and John Young, Haverford West, Pembrokeshure.

The extended Hale Family, Westbury and Wootton Bassett, Wilts.

April 09

Well worth stopping after a visit to the zoo. Tip Top Carvery!. Chapman Family, Fleet

Marjorie, Geoff Long.

January 09

"The first question we are always asked when we return from holiday, no matter where in the world we have stayed, is 'did you move rooms, did you move hotels, did you move countries! Those that know us well ask this as they know how fussy and critical we are and what high standards we expect, relative to the money we pay. Well, when we are asked the same question when we return now, the answer will be we did not move rooms, we did not move resort and did not move anywhere. Actually we arranged to stay longer and shall be returning later this year! Well done to the Wellsies for such a warmfelt arrival, stay and departure, and being made to feel part of their home." Jennifer, Stuart and Thomas, Mersea Island.

December 08 -New Year

"Thank you Richard and Patricia for letting us hire out a superb cottage. A very warm welcome from you both which was well received. We will be back. We have had a fabulous stay in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. I think we had more sunshine than when we were down in the summer. Olivia enjoyed her New Year's Day swim at Lyme Regis, followed by a great meal at the Harbour Inn. A happy New Year." McIntosh Family, Jain and Donovan, Luke, Olivia and Bethany.
